Keir Starmer has announced he will resign as Labour leader, paving the way for the end of his tenure as prime minister.
Sir Keir, who spent the weekend discussing his political future with his family at Chequers, unveiled his resignation plan in an address outside Number 10 this morning in response to growing pressure to quit.
He is stepping down from the role two years after he won a landslide victory in 2024’s general election.
It comes as Mr Burnham returns to parliament following his victory in Thursday’s Makerfield by-election, having secured a decisive majority over Reform.
Announcing his resignation, Sir Keir Starmer said: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.
“I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first.”
