Sir Keir Starmer has paid tribute to England’s players after they bowed out of the World Cup in a tense semi-final against Argentina.
Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez turned around the game late on in Atlanta as The Three Lions suffered heartbreak, losing 2-1.
Before the game, in which England led through an Anthony Gordon goal, the prime minster joked he had an “important appointment” at 8pm as he spoke at his final Prime Minister’s Questions.
There was also speculation that Sir Keir had planned to fly to the US to watch the final, and quickly return home for Andy Burnham’s coronation.
But following full-time, he shared the disappointment of the nation, writing on X: “Gutted. Tonight wasn’t the result we all hoped for, but this England team has given it their all. The passion and energy they’ve shown representing the badge has made us all proud.”
The prime minister had traded jokes with MPs about the game during PMQs, and was told he had been given a “red card” by his MPs.
He had responded jovially, saying: “I don’t care what the score is tonight, as long as we win.”
But he took a more serious note as he reminded the chamber of his successes during his time in office, including improvements to the NHS, investment in tackling child poverty, supporting Ukraine, and backing the campaigns of many families who have experienced difficulties.
He said he would back Mr Burnham wholeheartedly once he took office and promised to give his support “privately if asked for - not publicly when not asked for”.
His tributes to England were echoed by Prince William, who also said he was “gutted” but told the players he is “so proud” of them.
“Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you,” William wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high.”
