The Oscars are finally here — and they started with a massive upset when Amy Madigan won best supporting actress for her role in Weapons.
Madigan’s win comes as a shock because horror movies rarely take home the gold at the Academy Awards. She beat out One Battle After Another star Teyana Taylor, Sinners actor Wunmi Mosaku, and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning in Sentimental Value for the award. Plus, the win comes 40 years after Madigan’s first Oscar nod, setting a record for the longest gap between acting nominations.
Conan O’Brien kicked off the star-studded ceremony with a nod to Madigan’s terrifying character by dressing as Aunt Gladys and being chased by a crowd of children onto the Oscars stage — an energetic and chaotic opening that was sure to be confusing for anyone who missed seeing the horror film.
Tonight, Sinners ranks as the most nominated film of the night, with a total of 16, making it the most nominated film in Oscar history. Major nominees this year also include Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley, who is widely predicted to win the Best Actress prize, as well as Marty Supreme’s Timothée Chalamet and One Battle After Another writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson.
